Rwanda Country Profile

Rwanda is a small landlocked country, situated in the Central Africa. It boarders Uganda in the north, Burundi in the south, Tanzania in the East, and Democratic Republic of Congo in the west. It is the most densely populated country in Africa. It has a population of 8,162,000 people and a total area of 26,338 square miles. More than 90% of the population lives in rural areas.

Rwanda today is a woman's country with over 54.3% of the population being women, 34% of them heading homes. 92% involved in subsistence farming are women. 56.7% of the adults infected by HIV/AIDS are women, and 54% of the illiterate population is made up of women. 40% of women are widows. 5,500 women are in jail for genocide related crimes.

Rwanda is also one of the poorest countries on the continent, with a gross domestic product (GDP) per capita of $250.
